Name that Race Horse: Friday Fun for Lawyers and Law Librarians

By

What would you name a race horse, assuming the name would have to be a law-related, lawyer, or law librarian, or librarian name?

I learned recently that I have a relative who has to name race horses – lots of horses. I used to think it would fun to name a horse, but it’s not that much fun at all if you have to come up with a dozen or more names every time the stable gives birth, so to speak. (There are quite a few collective nouns for horses.)

There are horse naming rules (and more rules) but there are also fun horse-naming tips. Use your favorite search engine and try these searches: rules horse names or naming horses

Or, you can open up any Law Dictionary, Legal Encyclopedia, or Procedure treatise and find your favorite ….

So, what would you name your horse? I’ll pass along your suggestions – and maybe pick you a winner!

  1. I'd like to see a Stan Freeberg fan with $$$ name a horse “Dust Along The Rail” or “Sniffles by a Nose”.
Before looking at the rules, I thought the restriction was by the number of sylables.

I think Adverse Possession would be a nice name. Or how about Boundary Line?

  3. Motion in limine or Pocket Parts.

I think Man 'o Law; Speedy Trial; Swift Justice; or, going for the totally silly, Law of the Seabiscuit.

    Rex Judicata!

  6. M. Eggert says:

Res ipsa or res ipsa loquitour would SOUND as if the horse were fast (I like the Speedy Trial above).
While it could perpetuate a stereotype, I'd love to hear an announcer calling a race with a horse named “Shhhh?”
If your relative could name two foals from the same year how about Westlaw & Lexis or FastCase (nice speedy name) & Casemaker and get the respective services take their competition to the track?

FastCase and CaseMaker are both great names. I'll ask, but I think both are trademarked and I'm pretty sure that takes them off the list.

      Thanks!

    Disparate Impact.
Quick Claim (you know, what all the pro ses call Quit Claim deeds)
    Actual Harm

Boy, you could really have fun with this!

re quick claims: and we know they are anything but!

But it reminds me of one of those “I thought you said you were a x” librarian names. A friend said someone thought she said she was a LollyBrain, not a law librarian. Another friend said she was misheard to say she was a “barbarian,” which might not be too far from the truth – LOL!

Okay, now that I've conferred with my client I'm withdrawing my 'Writ of Mandate' and filing for 'Summary Judgment'; it's a real winner.
