We’re pleased, and very excited, to announce that our new, collaborative, Oregon county law libraries Oregon Legal Research website went live last week.

And what a journey it has been, with the generous and nurturing (and pro bono!) support from the best friend public law librarians ever had, Justia. It’s been a long and interesting journey, which we’ll write up one day soon – and post to the website, but not until the journey is complete.

In addition to continuing work on the website, note that the new WordPress Oregon Legal Research Blog won’t go “live” until the current Blogger Oregon Legal Research blog is fully migrated to WordPress. We still have lots of librarian work to do on it (taxonomies, oh my), but again, we bow down willingly and gratefully to Justia‘s patient and skilled teaching and technical staff. They create miracles that make us look good, really, really good.

Running a nonprofit is serious business requiring serious business and nonprofit management skills.

Colleges and universities offer classes on nonprofit management, e.g. the Institute for Nonprofit Management at PSU, and so does the Nonprofit Association of Oregon.

This one on Nonprofit Financial Fundamentals is coming up in January 2013 at a Beaverton location.

Here in Oregon we are in a strange sort of campaign for continued county law library funding. If you would like to weigh in on the subject, but don’t know anything about the business of public law libraries, you need to do a little research.

Public law libraries have management and service profiles, and demands, that are different from academic (law school) and law firm libraries, sometimes hugely different.

You can talk to your county law librarian if you have one, you can talk to me, or, you can do some independent reading.

Quick and Dirty Research Strategy:

1) Make an outline of your Quick and Dirty Legal Research strategy and take good notes as you proceed, especially keeping track of citations, effective keywords, and other results you find along the way.

2) Search Google or other search engine: You can find official and unofficial statutes, appellate court briefs, law review articles, case law, subject-specialist lawyer and law professor blogs, and much more.

Oregon Notary Public 2012-2013 Winter and Spring Training

I’m a self-proclaimed cheerleader for the Oregon Secretary of State’s Notary Training seminars. I insist notaries under my care attend training whenever they renew their commissions – and that includes me. I learn something new every time I attend – and the training is excellent.

So, if you haven’t attended an Oregon SOS notary seminar recently and don’t practice the Art of Notarization often and among experienced and well-trained notaries, sign up now to refresh your skills.
