Vacations are not for reading books like this one, Kafka Comes to America, but I’m a law librarian and we’re decidedly wonky. (I also read this (incredibly funny, though a bit worrying) and this (by Loren Estleman who also wrote this extraordinary book), so don’t think you can pigeonhole wonky law librarians 🙂

The first chapter of Kafka Comes to America brought back unnerving memories of a couple of things I saw back in the days when I worked in a Philadelphia jail. It’s also unnerving when your own life intersects with the same people in the book you’re reading. (And see also this post on the book at Trial Ad (and other) Notes on the same book.)

Uh, I also enjoy these and am a fan of this super heroine, with a complete set of all “her” (Peter O’Donnell, actually) novels (but not all the comic books).

While the law librarians are in town (Portland, Oregon) for the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) Annual Meeting in Portland, July 12th to July 15th, anyone may explore the Exhibit Hall for no charge.

The Exhibit Hall (at the Oregon Convention Center (OCC)): and here is a list of the vendors (with floor plan).

To get a free pass, just stop by a Registration Booth, either a librarian registration booth or the Exhibitor Registration booth.

I’m not in her techie league, but I do like looking in on what Nicole is doing at What I learned today. Today the one that tickled me was When is good. It seems worth a whirl (if we weren’t already spending half our time trying to schedule meetings, meals, etc.)

And take a look through her link to Wordle’s Word Clouds and to Twitabit, for when Twitter is down (Twitter is down!? Stop the thumbs!), and to 100 Niche Search Engines.

See Jim Calloway’s links, from his post: Your Website: Getting the Attention of the Search Engines. Excerpt:

You finally got your law firm Web site online and waited for the new clients to come rolling in. But for some reason it just didn’t happen that way. Well, all of our marketing efforts are long term projects, with the possible exception of TV, radio and newspaper ads. Your marketing efforts will hopefully still pay off for years in the future. But the Internet is all about immediate gratification, right? So this week, I’ll have a bit of an online symposium on getting noticed by the search engines.

The first article is The ABCs of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) by two of my favorite people Sharon D. Nelson and John Simek of Sensei Enterprises, Inc. SEO is one of those terms that intimidates a lot of people. Sharon and John do a great job of explaining the basics in understandable language. Everyone should read this article even if you don’t have time to start your SEO project this week. And, remember that you don’t have to try all of these techniques….” (Read full post.)

I have been writing directions to the Green Dragon from downtown for about 40+ law librarian bloggers who will be showing up in Portland in mid-July. (Uber Portland law professor blogger Jack Bogdanski will be our guest speaker – yeah! – and local bloggers are welcome to join us if they can take the heat of being surrounded by all those super smart, super geeky, but very cool law librarians 🙂

The bus directions are easy, but what about walking across the Morrison Bridge, in this city of pedestrians?

Now I’m a serious walker (but not much of a hiker – go figure), and it occurred to me that I had never walked across the Morrison Bridge. Now I know why. See this fabulous blog post on “How to walk the Morrison Bridge and not die, probably.”

Consumer Reports” product reviews ONLINE, FREE — REALLY!

(The Secret: Your Public Library)

I have promised to post this information regularly until I stop meeting perfectly intelligent people (who regularly and frequently use their public library) who don’t know they can search online, free, from home, the product reviews from Consumer Reports:
