If you’re a member of an association of owners (aka HOA) and want to learn about how the Oregon Legislature makes laws, here are two bills just for you. You can track them on the Legislature’s website – no need to drive to Salem, unless you want to. And contact your State Legislator to ask about these bills. A “Find Your Legislator” search tool is on the Legislature’s home page.

HB 2582: Prohibits association of owners for, or declarant of, planned community or condominium from prohibiting display of signs based on content of sign.

HB 2584: Prohibits association of owners for, or declarant of, planned community or condominium from making records of association confidential or exempt from disclosure to owners of real property in planned community or condominium.

“Could Volvo’s No Death Goal Show The Way for Access to Justice Innovation,” February 1, 2015 by Richard Zorza

‘I recently discovered that Volvo Cars has set a zero death goal for its new cars by 2020.

“Our vision is that no one is killed or injured in a new Volvo by 2020,” the chief of governmental affairs is reported to have sad. Whether or not they actually achieve the specifics of that goal is less important than the fact that by setting such a goal, and doing so publicly, they change their whole system from thinking day to day, or year to year, to where they really want to be. (More on the vision here.) Interestingly, it turns out that a bit less than 20 years ago Sweden set as a goal that “Nobody should be killed or seriously injured within the road transport system” so this is also an example of corporate culture following governmental policy.

The Media Release, “Oregon Courts Make It Easier to Complete Documents in Domestic Violence Restraining Order Cases,” can be found from OJD Media Releases, What’s New (for 1/15/15).

If you have trouble reaching the actual online FAPA service from the URL in the Media Release, it’s not you (there’s a rogue www in the URL), so go to the OJD Restraining Orders – Family Abuse Prevention Act (FAPA) webpage and look for the “Use Online Question-and-Answer Interview based eForms” link.

It doesn’t say so clearly, but you will likely need to create an account so be prepared to create a user-name and password. This feature enables you to return to your form later to complete or correct it.
