I’m no fan of the blood and drugs True Crime sub-genre, but I can’t resist a well written true (or alleged to be true) financial crime story, aka Follow the Money crime, no longer just associated with political crimes.

It’s possible I like them because the best of them are written by people who know their subjects, are excellent story tellers, and who almost always have a sense of humor that takes a slight edge off the outrage.

These are only a few of the many books written about financial and political flim-flams, confidence tricks, swindles, and scams, but they are some of my favorites. There are many more political, financial, and judicial true crime stories I could include … maybe later:

A few days ago a Trimet buddy told his fellow riders about an appalling tax return grab and go theft that happened at the downtown post office earlier this week. He was jostled from behind and when he turned the mail in his hand was grabbed, including, especially, the easily identifiable IRS tax return envelope.

He spent the remainder of the day, and week, doing the rounds of police, credit reporting agencies, IRS, and all the other ID theft checklist items, including a couple hours looking at security video, sadly to no avail.

Yes it’s a lesson to file electronically, but it’s also a lesson we all need to keep in mind – watch out for other people and not always strangers who invade your personal space. And keep those valuables out of sight!

“False “Court Case” Phishing Email Scam Widely Circulating in regards to Claiming to be from the Oregon Court of Appeals

The Oregon Judicial Department and the Appellate Records Office is warning the public about a potential computer virus that is being delivered via an email falsely claiming to be about an Oregon court case. The email references an upcoming court case; however, the email is a scam. Opening any attachment or clicking on any link in the message may trigger a malicious program designed to infect the recipient’s computer.

The email is not from the Oregon state courts nor is it about a court case. If you do have a case pending with the Court of Appeals and need to confirm a correspondence you received, please contact the Oregon Appellate Records Office at 503-986-5555….”

An awful lot of people have a hard time saying “no, thank you.”

Unless you have a burning desire to be scammed, I recommend you practice, practice, practice.

I got one of those Nanny-scam email messages.  You know the ones:
“My name is xx, I need a babysitter for my twins for our next holiday. This will be for next month from 10th September 2011 to 30 September 2011. Please kindly state your price if you accept to do it. Kindly reply to xxx@domain.com“
As much as we would like to respond with a “you can’t afford me” or “$1,000” an hour you kindly kinda scamming spammer,” I recommend you either delete it or report it, if you want.
